Description via Goodreads:
Clara Gardner has recently learned that she’s part angel. Having angel blood run through her veins not only makes her smarter, stronger, and faster than humans (a word, she realizes, that no longer applies to her), but it means she has a purpose, something she was put on this earth to do. Figuring out what that is, though, isn’t easy.
Her visions of a raging forest fire and an alluring stranger lead her to a new school in a new town. When she meets Christian, who turns out to be the boy of her dreams (literally), everything seems to fall into place—and out of place at the same time. Because there’s another guy, Tucker, who appeals to Clara’s less angelic side.
As Clara tries to find her way in a world she no longer understands, she encounters unseen dangers and choices she never thought she’d have to make—between honesty and deceit, love and duty, good and evil. When the fire from her vision finally ignites, will Clara be ready to face her destiny?
My thoughts:
The YA angel trend is not one I have been overly fond of. I forced myself through a lot of angel books before I found one that I enjoyed. That first one was Angelfall by Susan Ee. I can now add Unearthly to that very tiny list of good YA angel books! There's a lot of hype surrounding this series so I was a tiny bit nervous but I need not have worried. I seriously enjoyed it and I'm definitely now a fan of the series!

Unearthly follows Clara, a young girl who knows she is part angel. I thought it was awesome starting out a book where the character already knows about the supernatural! Usually half the book is about them figuring it out. In this book though, Clara has to figure something else out- her purpose. I felt like I was on Clara's journey with her and found myself racing through the book so I could discover all the secrets and what Clara's future held! I loved Clara's character, she's intelligent and brave but not without her flaws.

My favourite character was, without a doubt, Tucker Avery. If I was assigning stars to this book based on him alone, it would be a full five stars! I just adored everything about him. He's so sweet and lovely. Every conversation he had with Clara left me smiling and I was definitely wishing for the two of them to get together... even before Tucker showed his true awesome self! He's probably one of my favourite book boys and the main reason I'm super excited to read the next book.

I would absolutely recommend this one to people looking for a decent angel read. It's beautifully written with intriguing characters and a fascinating plot. It's not cheesy or over the top and Tuck will definitely have you swooning more than once! I'm looking forward to the next book- especially since many people seem to like it even more than this one!

  1. I liked this one a lot, too. To date, it's the only angel book I've managed to read because the idea just doesn't appeal to me. But yeah, Unearthly was super super good. Haven't read Hallowed yet though—I heard something about a love triangle so I've been less eager to try it out.

    Anyway, great review!

  2. I wasn't a huge fan of this book (like you I am not an angel fan) but I was a huge fan of Tucker Avery!! Great Review :)

  4. Glad you enjoyed this one and loved Tucker. I'm looking forward to finally getting around to reading it again and refreshing my memory (which is so bad) because I can't remember a lot of this.

How are you? You haven't been around much lately. And I see you turned 20, so Happy Birthday :)

  5. although I never continued the series, I agree with you that Unearthly is one of the rare few angel books actually worth reading. I'm glad Tucker has gained another fan! He is awesome, right?

  7. I'm very curious about this book and you've just added to my eagerness of reading it! It sounds promising since Clara already knows she's part angel and I'm interested to join her on her journey to find her purpose. And I'm even more eager to read it now because of your mention of Tucker, he sounds very swoon-worthy indeed - I just NEED to 'meet' him ;)

    Lovely review, Nicola <3

  9. P.S. I love Tucker but you're going to think about Christian in the next one. Still team Tucker here though. :)

  10. I thought it was awesome starting out a book where the character already knows about the supernatural! Usually half the book is about them figuring it out. --> This is so true! I loved that about this book too. It was a refreshing and welcomed change and partly why I warmed to Clara so quickly I think. Tucker is definitely my favourite character too. I can't say I'm a massive fan of Christian, not even after the next book. ;) Great review, Nicola!

  11. Isn't the cover a hoot? The Aussie cover also has a girl in a prom dress, but show her back and she's red haired. And the book is set in a ski town! With snow! :-) I thought it okay and a little different. If you want REALLY different for angels, try Rebecca Lim's Mercy.

  13. I really liked this one as well! I have to agree with you, and I think that Clara already knowing she was an angel was a great choice here. I haven't picked up Hallowed yet, but I'm looking forward to reading more about Clara.

  14. Loretta @ Between the Pages has been bugging me for AGES to read this one. I shall have to make her happy one of these days by reading it!

I'm so glad that you enjoyed the angel theme in this book, it isn't done very well in YA overall. I need to read about Tucker though because you listed him as one of your top guys and where I come from that is a hard place to fill because I've loved some of my top guys for years. :)

    Thanks for the awesome review!
